The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is the final Spider-Man video game (and hence the final Marvel game) produced by Activision, who lost the game publishing rights to some Marvel characters shortly after the game’s release. Square Enix also localized the game in Japan as a Sony-exclusive release. On April 17, Gameloft published a paid mobile version for iOS and Android smartphones. The Xbox One version was released digitally alongside the other platforms, although physical copies were delayed by two weeks. The game was released on April 29 in North America and May 2 in Europe for Microsoft Windows, Nintendo 3DS, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Wii U, and Xbox 360 to mixed to mostly negative reviews, with particular criticism aimed at the plot, writing, repetitive combat, and the Hero-Menace morality system, and is widely regarded as one of the worst Spider-Man games ever made. The game’s plot extends to that of the film by incorporating characters and elements from Spider-Man comic books and other sections of the Marvel Universe.
It is the sequel to 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man and takes place inside the same continuity, though not in the same way as the movie.
